Start here · Install & update
Install it. Keep it current.
Install SwarmPane on Mac, Windows and Linux, get past the first-run prompts, and see how each build gets its updates.
Install on a Mac
One universal disk image for Apple silicon and Intel Macs with macOS 13 or later, signed and notarized.
- Download SwarmPane for Mac from Downloads and open the disk image.
- Drag SwarmPane into Applications.
- Open SwarmPane from Applications. The first time, macOS asks whether to open an app downloaded from the internet: choose Open.
- Choose Sign in or create account and approve the code in your browser.
- Run SwarmPane from Applications, not from the disk image: a copy opened from the disk image can’t update itself.
- If macOS offers to install the command line developer tools the first time SwarmPane uses Git, that’s macOS’s own prompt. Git features need them.
Install on Windows
An x64 installer for Windows 10 and 11. It isn’t code-signed yet, so Windows warns you before it runs.
- Download SwarmPane for Windows from Downloads. If your browser says the file isn’t commonly downloaded, keep it (in Edge: … → Keep → Show more → Keep anyway).
- Run the installer. When Microsoft Defender SmartScreen says “Windows protected your PC”, choose More info, then Run anyway.
- Install for yourself (the default, no administrator rights needed) or for everyone on the PC. The installer adds Start menu and desktop shortcuts, then opens SwarmPane.
- Choose Sign in or create account and approve the code in your browser.
- On Windows 11 with Smart App Control turned on, Windows can block an unsigned installer without offering Run anyway. Contact support if that happens.
Install on Linux: the .deb
For Ubuntu 22.04 or later, Debian 12 or later, and other Debian-based x64 systems. It’s the Linux download on Downloads.
- Download SwarmPane for Linux from Downloads.
- In a terminal, go to the folder you downloaded it to (usually Downloads) and install it with apt, as below. Use the name of the file you downloaded.
- Open SwarmPane from your applications menu.
- Choose Sign in or create account and approve the code in your browser.
- On Ubuntu 24.04 and later, the package also installs an AppArmor profile, so Chromium’s sandbox works.
- apt refuses the package on systems older than glibc 2.34, such as Ubuntu 20.04 or Debian 11. They aren’t supported.
cd ~/Downloads
sudo apt install ./SwarmPane-1.0.1-linux-amd64.debInstall on Linux: the AppImage
For other x64 distributions with glibc 2.34 or newer, such as Fedora 36 or later. Nothing to install: it’s one file, and it updates itself.
- Download the AppImage with the link below.
- Make it executable: in your file manager, open its Properties and allow executing it as a program, or use chmod +x in a terminal, as below.
- Double-click it, or run it from a terminal.
- Choose Sign in or create account and approve the code in your browser.
- It needs FUSE 3 (the fuse3 package, present on most desktops). Without it, run it with --appimage-extract-and-run, or use the .deb.
- On Ubuntu 24.04 and later, the AppImage runs without Chromium’s sandbox and says so. Install the .deb there to run sandboxed.
cd ~/Downloads
chmod +x SwarmPane-1.0.1-linux-x86_64.AppImage
./SwarmPane-1.0.1-linux-x86_64.AppImageHow updates work
Copies that update themselves look for a new version when SwarmPane starts and every six hours, download it in the background, and install it when you quit. To install it sooner, choose Restart & install in Settings → General → Updates. If agents are still working, SwarmPane lists what’s running and asks first.
Check now, in the same place, looks right away and says how your copy updates.
- Mac: automatic from 1.0.1, as long as SwarmPane runs from Applications.
- Windows: automatic for copies installed with the installer.
- Linux AppImage: automatic. The new version replaces the AppImage file when SwarmPane quits or restarts.
- Linux .deb: by hand for now. When a new version is on Downloads, download the new .deb and install it with sudo apt install, as above. Settings says SwarmPane’s APT repository is off: that’s expected, because the repository isn’t live yet.
Coming from 1.0.0
SwarmPane 1.0.0 for Mac and the 1.0.0 .deb can’t update themselves. Install 1.0.1 once by hand; your projects, settings and sign-in stay as they are.
- Mac: download SwarmPane from Downloads, open the disk image, drag SwarmPane to Applications and choose Replace. From then on, updates arrive by themselves.
- Linux .deb: download the new .deb and install it with sudo apt install, as above.
- Windows and the AppImage: nothing to do. 1.0.1 arrives by itself.
Uninstall
Uninstalling keeps your projects and SwarmPane’s data folders, so a reinstall picks up where you left off.
- Mac: quit SwarmPane, then move it from Applications to the Trash.
- Windows: open Settings → Apps and uninstall SwarmPane.
- Linux: sudo apt remove swarmpane for the .deb. For the AppImage, delete the file.
